Learn why integrating Tuina therapy into mainstream healthcare is important to us.
Preamble
We, the undersigned healthcare practitioners, researchers, clinicians, policymakers, and advocates from around the world, gathered at the inaugural International Roundtable for Tuina Advancement held in Singapore on 16 May 2025, to reaffirm our shared commitment to advancing Tuina—a cornerstone of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)—as a recognised, evidence-informed treatment modality within contemporary healthcare systems.
As global health systems face rising challenges—including chronic illness, musculoskeletal disorders, and ageing populations—Tuina offers a safe, non-invasive, and culturally rooted therapy with the potential to contribute significantly to more person-centred and integrative models of care.
Our Shared Commitment
We affirm our collective intention to promote the development, integration, and responsible use of Tuina through international collaboration rooted in scientific integrity, cultural inclusivity, and social relevance.
Advancing Research and Evidence
A strong scientific foundation is essential to Tuina’s broader acceptance.
We commit to fostering collaborative clinical research that meets international standards of rigour and ethics.
By identifying shared priorities, conducting multicentre studies, and aligning outcome measures, we seek to produce credible evidence that informs clinical practice across diverse health systems.
Integrating and Advancing Tuina within Healthcare Systems
We support the recognition of Tuina as a viable treatment option and its integration into both public and private healthcare systems.
In settings where Tuina is not yet established, we encourage engagement with health authorities, insurers, and regulators to facilitate appropriate access, reimbursement, and oversight.
In contexts where Tuina is already part of the system, we advocate for strengthening its role through expanded clinical application, professional training, and research-informed practice.
We also commit to documenting and sharing successful models of integration to support system-wide learning and encourage broader institutional adoption.
Establishing Standards and Building Capacity
We affirm the importance of standardising Tuina treatment protocols for specific health conditions as a foundation for high-quality care.
Based on these standards, we support the development of structured training programmes and internationally recognised certification systems to strengthen practitioner competence.
Through this integrated approach, we aim to uphold professional integrity, ensure consistent treatment outcomes, and foster public trust in Tuina.
Ensuring Ethical and Quality Practice
To complement standardisation and training, we advocate for the development of international practice guidelines that safeguard patient safety and uphold ethical standards.
These should be supported by data systems and quality assurance mechanisms that promote transparency, monitor outcomes, and encourage continuous improvement.
Fostering a Global Network of Collaboration
The advancement of Tuina calls for sustained, cross-sector collaboration.
We propose the establishment of a global alliance to coordinate efforts in clinical innovation, education, research, and public engagement.
This alliance will serve as a platform for shared learning, joint initiatives, and collective advocacy.
Conclusion
This declaration marks the beginning of a new chapter for Tuina—one that honours its centuries-old legacy while embracing the opportunities and expectations of contemporary healthcare. We call on governments, institutions, and communities to join us in realising a shared vision for safe, effective, and inclusive healing practices.
Signed on this 16th day of May, 2025, in Singapore
